Critical Response- The Silver Chair

The Silver Chair
By C.S. Lewis

On first reading the passage, the setting affects the character because it is a dull day at an unpleasant school. The character, Jill Pole, is crying because she is being bullied and the school does not do anything about it. The mood if the novel seems ominous and depressing. The author maintains your interest through a claustrophobic atmosphere that the character cannot seem to escape from. It would be helpful to know more about the time period during which the novel was written. It seems that at the time of the publication of the novel that bullying was tolerated; today, bullying is not accepted. It would enhance my interpretation of the novel by knowing that the social morals at the time were different; that bribery and bullying were accepted. During the time period that the author wrote this novel, children were sent away at a young age to live at boarding schools. They were often left to fend for themselves from unsympathetic adults and bullying children. The ending is effective because it makes you want to find out if things get better for Jill Pole and if the school changes for the better.

Cherry Valance

Cherry is stunningly beautiful Soc. Her real name is Sherry but everyone calls her Cherry because she has cherry-red hair. She is seventeen years old and is a cheerleader at her highschool. She has a kind personality but enjoys gossip. Her best friend is Marcia and her boyfriend is Bob. Her family is fairly wealthy because they live on West Side. She hates the gang rivalry between the Greasers and the Socs because she hates fighting.

The Outsiders-Character Description-Dallas "Dally" Winston

Dallas "Dally" Winston
Dallas Winston is originally from New York. He spent three on the wild side of the Big Apple and had been arrested at the age of ten years old.  He has a very long record with the police. He is a Greaser.  He is eighteen years old but has a false identification card that states that he is twenty-one, so that he can purchase alcohol. People rarely cross Dallas because he would beat the tar out of them. He has an elfish face with high cheek bones, pointed chin, sharp animal-like teeth and ears like lynx. His hair is platinum blonde and hangs over his forehead. He has a dangerous personality and would beat the tar out of you if you rubbed him the wrong way. Dallas's best friend is Buck. Buck and him have beer blasts and rumbles at Buck's wild house parties. Dallas hates the Socs because they're always jumping hoods from his gang. He would like to beat up all of the Socs by himself if he had to. Dallas doesn't communicate with his father, because his father is always yelling at him for getting into trouble.

Introduction

Hello,

My name is Griffin and I am thirteen years old. I am currently going to school at DP Todd Secondary School. My favorite activities include reading, downhill skiing, water skiing, watching movies, eating and sleeping. My dad recently bought a 42" HD television and dvd player, so I can now enjoy watching my favorite movies which are...
  • Casino Royale
  • The Jason Bourne movies
  • Live Free or Die Hard
What I enjoy about high school is having letter grades. In my opinion, are easier to understand than the number system. I like the long lunch breaks you get in high school. What I would like to get out of English 8 is more knowledge on the origination of words and a good grade. I would like a good grade because if I do so I may be accepted into Enriched Social Studies 9 (which I think would be interesting).
